Overview
The MITOrthoTools for ArcView allows ArcView users to incorporate online orthophotos into their views.

Components
To use the MITOrthoTools for ArcView, three components are needed:
  1. The MITOrtho Extension (MITOrtho.avx)
  2. The MITOrtho class files (orthoPost.class and errorFrame.class)
  3. The Java 1.1 Run Time Environment (JRE)
If you're updating your MITOrthoTools for ArcView, you only need to download the MITOrtho.avx extension and the class files.

Download
Choose one of the following download/setup options:
Easy setup
  • Required if you don't have the JRE installed
Custom setup
  • Required if you're installing the package on Unix.
  • Recommended if you have the Java JRE installed or you want to modify the default location of the components or the MITOrthoServers used by the extension.

Download: EASY SETUP
You must download ALL the components of the MITOrthoTools before using the extension.

Notes
MITOrtho.avx
MITOrtho
Extension
  • Make sure the file is saved under a .avx extension.
  • The extension should be placed in one of ArcView's extension directories, where ArcView looks for all available extensions (The FAQ has more on the location of these directories).
MITOrtho.zip
MITOrtho class files
and Java 1.1. JRE
  • Unzip the file and run setup.exe.
  • This setup procedure will create a directory c:\MITOrtho and transfer the necessary files to this directory.

Download: CUSTOM SETUP
This setup allows you to specify the location of the JRE and the class files, and to add, remove, or modify the set of MITOrthoServers accessed by the ArcView extension. You specify these choices in an MITOrthoPC.ini file (for PC's) or MITOrthoUNIX.ini (for Unix).

How To Use

If the extension has been placed in the right location, it should appear in the extensions list. If not, review the download instructions or the FAQ

Loading the extension adds two buttons to the view button bar:

  • Pick Server: Click on this button to choose an MITOrthoServer as the source for your orthophotos. You can experiment using the following servers. For more MITOrthoServers, refer to the MITOrtho homepage
  •   Get Ortho: Click on this button to retrieve the orthophoto that covers the geographic extent of the current view.
To overlay your vector files with a downloaded image, one of two conditions must hold:
  • The vector files are in the same projection as the image downloaded (See table below)
  • The vector files are in lat/lon (in which case you need to choose the image projection in your view according to the MITOrthoServer images projection). The following table lists the projections for the MITOrthoServers mentioned above.
